The Art of Marriage

The little things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day.

It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
The courtship should not end with the honeymoon,
It should continue through all the years.

It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice,
But in the spirit of joy.

It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating
Gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo or the wife to have wings of an angel.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.

It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.

It is finding room for the things of the spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

The Best is Yet to Be

On your joyful wedding day,
You begin a brand new life.
Friends and family give their gifts
To joyful husband, blissful wife.
But the greatest gift you’ll ever get,
A gift from heaven above,
Is love forever, ending never,
Everlasting love.

You'll share life's joy and pleasure;
You'll have plenty of that, it's true.
But love is the real treasure
For your new spouse and you.
And if life hands you challenges,
As it does to one and all,
Your love will hold you steady
And never let you fall.

Your wedding day is full of joy;
Tomorrow you cannot see.
But one thing’s sure for the two of you:
The best is yet to be.

Bless Our Marriage

We thank you, O God,
for the love you have implanted in our hearts.

May it always inspire us to be kind in our words,
considerate of feeling,
and concerned for each other's needs and wishes.

Help us to be understanding
and forgiving of human weaknesses and failings.

Increase our faith and trust in You
and may Your prudence guide our life and love.

Bless our marriage O God,
with peace and happiness,
and make our love fruitful for your glory and our joy
both here and in eternity.

Amen

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
and it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.
Love never fails.

...And now these three remain: Faith, Hope, and Love.

But the greatest of these is Love.

Ruth 1:16

"Wherever you go, I will go. I will live and love beside you.
Your family will be my family, and together we will go with God.
Wherever you stay, I will stay, content and secure around you.
Your hope will be the source of my hope and together we will hope in God.
Wherever you are, I will be , living and loving inside you.
Your dreams will be my energy, and our future will be in God.
Blessed be God, who sinks deep roots in us as a new creation,
Taking the best of what has been for the seeds of what will be.
Wherever you go, we will go, wherever you are, there we will be.
For God's love is all-encompassing."

Walk With Me in Love

Walk with me in love,
Talk to me about what you cannot say to others
Laugh with me even when you feel silly
Cry with me when you are most upset
Plan with me all your dreams
Share with me all the beautiful things in life
Fight with me against all the ugly things in life
Create with me dreams to follow
Have fun with me in whatever we do
Work with me towards common goals
Dance with me to the rhythm of our love
Walk with me throughout life
Let us hug each other at every step in our journey
Forever in love.

True Love

True Love is a sacred flame that burns eternally.
And none can dim its special glow or change its destiny.
True Love speaks in tender tones and hears with gentle ear.
True Love gives with open heart and True Love conquers fear.
True Love makes no harsh demands. It neither rules nor binds.
True Love holds with gentle hands the hearts that it entwines.
You don’t marry the person you can live with,
you marry the person you can’t live without .

Ring Prayer

Heavenly Father, we call for your blessing for these rings,
both as symbols of love and union between ___ and ___
and as tokens of their hopes and dreams fulfilled in their
commitment to each other, this day and every day of the rest
of their lives together.

We ask that these rings hold and carry these dreams, remind
them of the endless circle of their union to each other, and be a beautiful
reflection, of their sacred vows to each other, now and always.

We seek this blessing of love not only for ___ and ___ but also for
all those who are now married, or have in the past made vows of love to
someone they loved.

Amen

The Wedding Ring

Circles have no beginning and no end,
so in the long and sacred tradition of marriage,
rings have come to symbolize eternal love
and endless union of body, of mind, and of the spirit.

They have been given by lovers to each other
as tokens of faith, trust, and hope
as well as a tangible sign of a promise
given and kept through the days
of their lives together.

We are here to witness what was promised,
the giving of all the intangibles
of their heart and spirit:
love, trust, faith, and hope,
not just in each other,
but also in their relationship.

They have made a declaration
that from their wedding day forth,
they are united before the world
in a promise that spans the years of their lives.

Blessing for a Marriage

May your marriage bring you all the exquisite excitements a marriage should bring, and may life grant you also patience, tolerance, and understanding.

May you always need one another – not so much to fill your emptiness as to help you to know your fullness. A mountain needs a valley to be complete; the valley does not make a mountain less, but more; and the valley is more a valley because it has a mountain towering over it. So let it be with you and you.

May you need one another, but not out of weakness.
May you want one another, but not out of lack.
May you entice one another, but not compel one another.
May you embrace one another, but not encircle one another.
May you succeed in all important ways with one another, and not fail in the little graces.
May you look for things to praise, often say, “I love you!” and take no notice of small faults.

If you have quarrels that push you apart, may both of you hope to have good sense enough to take the first step back.

May you enter into the mystery which is the awareness of one another’s presence – no more physical than spiritual, warm and near when you are side by side, and warm and near when you are in separate rooms or even distant cities.
May you have happiness, and may you find it making one another happy.
May you have love, and may you find it loving one another.

Marriage Advice

In the days ahead of you, there will be times of difficulty and conflict. When you find yourselves in these situations, I ask you to reflect on this marriage advice:

Let your love be stronger than your anger.
Learn the wisdom of compromise, for it is better to bend than to break.
Look for the best in your beloved rather than the worst.
Confide in your partner and ask for help when you need it.
Remember that true friendship is the basis for any lasting relationship.
Give your spouse the same courtesies and kindness you bestow on your friends.
